There aren’t too many people who would be able to bet on the American League West Division race and be able to make much of a profit. Sitting on an 11.5-game league, the Houston Astros sit as -300000 favorites.
If you had $10,000 laying around and wanted to bet on Houston, you could see a nearly guaranteed return of $33.33 if you are willing to wait a few more weeks to get it.
There has been one team that emerged after a slow start to keep the race at a respectable distance but is unlikely to even make the Astros sweat. Here’s a look at the current betting odds to win the American League West Division.
Houston ready to get back on top
The Astros have had one of the more remarkable runs recently. Houston is on its way to its fifth AL West title since 2017. During that stretch, the Astros have made three appearances in the World Series, including a victory over the Dodgers in 2017.
While Houston’s accomplishments have been stigmatized by their sign-stealing scandal, there’s no doubt the Astros are a deep and talented squad.
One thing that separates this group from some of the teams in the past is the remarkable return of Justin Verlander from surgery. Verlander, 39, is 15-3 with a 1.73 ERA for Houston this season. The Astros should challenge for the top spot in the American League as the division is likely already wrapped up.
Seattle wants back in
The Mariners, who are +4000 to win the division, are sitting on MLB’s longest active streak without making the playoffs. Seattle last won the division and made the playoffs in 2001. The Mariners, who have climbed eight games above .500, are in the second wild-card spot.
Logan Gilbert has won 10 games on the mound with a 3.09 ERA for Seattle. Eugenio Suarez and Julio Rodriguez lead the Mainers with 18 home runs apiece.
Trout, Ohtani homer, Angels in fourth place
The Los Angeles Angels, who are +22500 to win the division, are loaded with top-end talent but aren’t likely to be in the playoffs at all. Shohei Ohtani, who is the only player in the league to consistently pitch and hit at a high level, will once again be out of the playoffs because Los Angeles’ pitching staff isn’t up to snuff.
The Angels have fallen hard after starting the season 21-11. Los Angeles is 45-62.
Getting ready for 2022
The Texas Rangers, who are also +22500 to win the division, are 11 games below .500 but have shown some progress this season. Texas has smashed 131 home runs so far this season, ranking ninth in MLB. The Oakland A’s can’t seem to catch a break.
The “Moneyball” darlings have fallen on hard times. Oakland has had slumping home attendance and hasn’t been able to field a competitive roster this season. The A’s, who are +90000 to win the division, are just looking to find a direction.
